Karunya Trust

Our Approach to Sustainable Community Development

CREATING LASTING CHANGE THROUGH AN INTEGRATED APPROACH

At Karunya Trust, we believe that poverty is rarely caused by a single challenge. A child struggling in school may also face poor nutrition at home. A family without a stable livelihood may find it difficult to access healthcare. Women who lack opportunities often have limited participation in community decision-making. In tribal communities, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to government schemes, and environmental challenges can further deepen vulnerability.

These challenges are closely connected, and addressing just one of them is often not enough to create lasting change.

For this reason, Karunya Trust follows an integrated approach to community development. Rather than implementing isolated interventions, the organisation works with individuals, families, and communities across multiple areas that together contribute to improved quality of life and long-term resilience.

Every programme is designed to complement the others, ensuring that communities receive support that is practical, sustainable, and responsive to their needs.

SUSTAINABILITY AT KARUNYA TRUST: CREATING LASTING CHANGE BEYOND THE INTERVENTION

Karunya Trust views sustainability not simply as the continuation of a project, but as the ability of individuals, families and communities to carry forward the progress made through an intervention.

Our approach is to strengthen knowledge, skills, livelihoods, community leadership, access to entitlements and essential infrastructure, enabling people to progressively become more self-reliant and better equipped to shape their own futures.

Education that creates pathways to opportunity

01

Education that creates pathways to opportunity

Education is one of the strongest foundations of long-term change. Through our education interventions, children and young people are supported to develop foundational learning, life skills and the confidence to continue their education.

We facilitate progression from non-formal education to formal schooling, higher education and, ultimately, employment and sustainable livelihoods. By investing in knowledge and capabilities today, we aim to create opportunities that can contribute to greater self-reliance in the future.

Livelihoods that create continuing income

Livelihoods that create continuing income

Sustainable livelihoods are central to reducing prolonged dependency. Karunya supports individuals through vocational training, employment linkages and entrepreneurship opportunities.

We help people develop skills, explore employment and enterprise opportunities, start small businesses, access markets and showcase or sell products they produce. Where possible, our role is to create connections and opportunities that can generate continuing income rather than provide indefinite financial support.

Community Leadership, Participation & Advocacy

03

Community Leadership, Participation & Advocacy

Sustainable change is strengthened when communities are able to participate in decisions, identify their own concerns and take collective action.

Karunya works with children, women, youth and community groups to build awareness, leadership and the confidence to address community and social issues.

We encourage community members to understand their rights and entitlements, engage with government departments and relevant authorities, and take an active role in finding solutions to issues affecting their communities. By strengthening local capacities and ownership, we aim to enable communities to continue addressing their concerns beyond the period of direct project intervention.

Connecting People to Government Systems and Entitlements

Sustainability also means ensuring that people are able to access the systems, schemes and entitlements available to them.

Karunya facilitates access to government schemes, social security programmes and other entitlements that can provide continuing or periodic support. We also assist individuals and families in obtaining essential identity and supporting documents required to access these services.

The objective is to strengthen people's ability to access available support and opportunities beyond the immediate project intervention.

Essential Infrastructure that Creates a Foundation for Progress

05

Essential Infrastructure that Creates a Foundation for Progress

In communities facing multiple vulnerabilities, basic infrastructure can be a critical first step towards long-term development.

Interventions such as safe housing, sanitation facilities, access to water, restoration of schools and other essential community infrastructure address immediate structural barriers and create a more stable foundation for individuals and families.

Once basic needs are better secured, people are better positioned to focus on education, livelihoods, health and other longer-term aspirations.

Facilitating Pathways to Self-Reliance

Karunya's role is often to act as a facilitator, connector and enabler — bringing together people, institutions, government systems, markets, employers and resources.

We aim to create pathways through which individuals and communities can progressively access opportunities, services and systems with greater independence.

Our approach is not only to provide support, but to help create the knowledge, capabilities, connections and opportunities that enable people to move towards greater self-reliance.
