Integrated Education

Why We Intervene

Education is a powerful pathway to opportunity, dignity and a better quality of life. Yet, for many children, youth, women and other vulnerable groups, social and economic circumstances can create barriers to learning, continuing education, developing skills and accessing opportunities.

Karunya Trust intervenes in education to address these barriers and ensure that education goes beyond academic achievement. We believe that individuals need not only knowledge, but also life skills, confidence, values, guidance and opportunities to prepare for their future.

Through its Integrated Education approach, Karunya Trust seeks to complement existing educational systems and create opportunities for individuals to develop their full potential, pursue meaningful careers and lead lives of dignity and respect.

Our Interventions

  • Provides daily activity-based non-formal education for children from balwadi to secondary school level, with regular assessments.
  • Provides educational materials, teaching aids, school kits and other learning resources to children and students in need.
  • Supports school enrolment, re-enrolment and continuation of education, including children who have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out.
  • Provides support for Class 10 students, including examination enrolment and preparation.
  • Supports college admissions, scholarships, higher education and career-related guidance.
  • Provides scholarships and financial assistance to children and adolescents from low-income families pursuing school and higher education.
  • Conducts remedial education and academic support for children who require additional learning assistance.
  • Provides adult literacy programmes, particularly for women in vulnerable communities.
  • Conducts life-skills education, study counselling, career guidance and value-based learning for children and youth.
  • Provides digital and computer-related skills, spoken English, communication and workplace-readiness training.
  • Organises sports, arts, music, dance, yoga, competitions, vacation camps, library activities and educational exposure visits as part of children's holistic development.
  • Provides self-defence training for adolescent girls and promotes participation in Scouts and Guides.
  • Uses sports and structured activities to engage children and youth, promote healthy development and support aspirations for careers in sports.
  • Provides educational support and school-related assistance during emergencies and disasters, including school restoration and distribution of educational supplies.

Holistic Health

Why We Intervene

Good health is fundamental to a life of dignity and wellbeing. Yet, vulnerable individuals and communities often face barriers to timely and appropriate healthcare, including limited awareness, inadequate nutrition, financial constraints and difficulty accessing available health services and entitlements.

Karunya Trust intervenes in health because wellbeing extends beyond the absence of disease. Physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing are interconnected and require a comprehensive approach to healthcare.

Through its Holistic Health approach, Karunya Trust seeks to strengthen awareness, prevention, access to healthcare and community participation, while connecting vulnerable individuals and families with appropriate health services and support so that they can lead healthier and more dignified lives.

Our Interventions

  • Provides regular health assessments and health monitoring for children and other vulnerable community members.
  • Organises general and specialised health camps for medical consultation, screening and support.
  • Provides medical assistance and support for individuals and families facing illness or financial hardship.
  • Supports access to medical treatment, medicines, hospital and institutional care when required.
  • Provides emergency medical assistance and ambulance services, including during disasters and critical situations.
  • Provides nutrition support through daily nutritious meals, ration kits and specialised nutrition support for vulnerable individuals and families.
  • Provides nutrition support to people affected by serious illnesses and other vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, elderly persons and single-parent families.
  • Conducts health awareness and preventive health sessions covering disease prevention, hygiene and other local health concerns.
  • Promotes menstrual hygiene awareness among adolescent girls and other health-related awareness initiatives.
  • Provides health and hygiene kits to vulnerable children and families.
  • Provides counselling and psychosocial support through centre-based and home-based interventions.
  • Conducts awareness, counselling and referral support related to substance abuse and rehabilitation.

  • Supports the development of Public Health Centre infrastructure in remote villages.
  • Provides access to safe drinking water through the construction and installation of drinking-water facilities.
  • Supports sanitation infrastructure through the provision of sanitation units to tribal and underprivileged communities.

Sustainable Livelihood

Why We Intervene

A stable and dignified livelihood is essential for individuals and families to meet their basic needs, build self-reliance and improve their quality of life. Yet, vulnerable communities often face limited access to skills, employment opportunities, finance, markets and other resources needed to secure sustainable incomes.

Karunya Trust intervenes in livelihood to address these gaps and create pathways for individuals and families to strengthen their economic security. We believe that people should have opportunities to develop their abilities, earn a regular income and become more self-reliant.

Through its Sustainable Livelihood approach, Karunya Trust focuses on skills development, entrepreneurship, agriculture and other income-generating opportunities, while building linkages to employment, finance and markets to strengthen household incomes and economic wellbeing.

Our Interventions

  • Provides vocational and market-oriented skills training for women, youth and other community members.
  • Offers certificate-based training in areas such as tailoring, beautician skills, culinary skills, graphic design, fabric painting, jewellery making, embroidery, paper-bag making, block printing, mehendi and other crafts.
  • Provides computer skills, spoken English, communication, graphic design and workplace-readiness training to strengthen employability.
  • Provides entrepreneurship and business-development training.
  • Supports individuals and families to initiate or strengthen income-generating activities.
  • Supports women and community members in developing livelihood opportunities based on local skills and resources.
  • Promotes agricultural livelihoods through improved farming practices, kitchen gardens, organic farming and related training.
  • Supports livestock rearing and dairy farming as livelihood opportunities.
  • Forms and strengthens farmers' groups and community institutions to improve access to knowledge, schemes and livelihood opportunities.
  • Provides financial savings awareness and facilitates access to credit.
  • Connects job seekers with employment opportunities and provides support with CV preparation, interview preparation and career guidance.
  • Builds linkages with vocational institutions, employers, NGOs and other organisations for training and employment opportunities.

Good Governance

Why We Intervene

People and communities are better able to shape their lives and access opportunities when they are aware of their rights, entitlements and responsibilities and can participate meaningfully in decisions that affect them. Yet, vulnerable communities may face barriers in accessing government services, understanding their rights and engaging with local governance systems.

Karunya Trust intervenes in the area of Good Governance to strengthen the capacity of communities to understand and exercise their rights, access public services and participate in local decision-making. We believe that informed, empowered and organised communities can play an active role in shaping inclusive and responsive development.

Through its Good Governance approach, Karunya Trust focuses on community leadership, constitutional awareness, rights and entitlements, local self-governance and collective action, supported by capacity building, networking and partnerships. This seeks to strengthen accountable, inclusive and people-centred governance that promotes dignity and social justice.

Our Interventions

  • Facilitates access to government schemes, benefits, services and entitlements.
  • Supports community members in preparing documents and completing processes required to access government services and schemes.
  • Builds linkages with government departments, local authorities, NGOs, educational institutions, hospitals and other service providers.
  • Organises exposure visits and interactions with government offices and public-service institutions.
  • Conducts awareness programmes on constitutional rights, child rights, government schemes, social issues and community concerns.
  • Strengthens community leadership and women's participation in decision-making and local development processes.
  • Forms and strengthens Self-Help Groups, Cluster Level Associations, Federations and other community institutions.
  • Forms and strengthens Child Rights Protection Committees and Children's Parliament groups.
  • Promotes awareness and participation in Gram Sabha and local self-governance processes.
  • Prepares and supports women and community members to participate in Gram Sabha meetings and raise community concerns.

Safe Habitat

Why We Intervene

A safe and secure living environment is fundamental to the health, dignity and wellbeing of individuals and families. Yet, vulnerable communities may live in inadequate housing and face limited access to basic amenities and infrastructure, leaving them more exposed to health, environmental and other risks.

Karunya Trust intervenes in Safe Habitat to address these gaps and support communities in creating safer and more secure living environments. We believe that a home should provide not only shelter, but also a foundation for health, safety, stability and dignity.

Through its Safe Habitat approach, Karunya Trust works to improve living conditions through housing support and rehabilitation, while collaborating with government and other stakeholders to strengthen access to safe and sustainable habitat solutions.

Our Interventions

  • Provides partial or full housing support to underprivileged and tribal families.
  • Supports families living in vulnerable housing conditions with essential protective materials such as tarpaulin sheets.
  • Creates awareness about government housing schemes and facilitates access to available housing support.

Sustainable Environment

Why We Intervene

A healthy and sustainable environment is essential for the wellbeing of communities and future generations. Yet, environmental degradation, depletion of natural resources and changing climatic conditions can affect livelihoods, health, access to essential resources and the overall quality of life, particularly for vulnerable communities.

Karunya Trust intervenes in the area of environment because the wellbeing of people is closely connected to the health of the natural environment. We believe that protecting and responsibly using natural resources is a shared responsibility that requires awareness, participation and collective action.

Through its Sustainable Environment approach, Karunya Trust promotes environmental education, conservation and restoration of natural resources, climate-resilient practices and community-led initiatives to contribute towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable environment for present and future generations.

Our Interventions

  • Conducts tree plantation and green-cover initiatives.
  • Promotes forest conservation and the restoration and preservation of natural resources.
  • Conducts environmental awareness and education programmes with children, families and communities.
  • Promotes awareness and action on waste management.
